See the progression of a scene from Lightyear
Check out the seven-step process that each Pixar scene goes through
Each Pixar film goes through a rigorous production process before making it to the big screen. In these exclusive images, track the evolution of a single moment from Lightyear as it goes from Story to Final.
1. STORYBOARD
At Pixar, everything starts with story. The story artists take the script - penned by director Angus MacLane and co-writer Jason Headley (of Onward fame amongst others) and hand it off to the story artists who put their own spin on the scene. This board was done by Story Supervisor Dean Kelly, who was also the head of story on Coco.
2. CONCEPT ART
The visual development continues with the production designer and their team who work with the director to develop the look and feel of the film. The production designer is often the third person brought on board a Pixar film after the director and producer. This image was done by Production Designer Tim Evatt.
3. PREVIS
Previs is a rough way to see what a sequence will look like in visual form. The animation is often rough but gives all departments a chance to weigh in on each sequence.
4. LAYOUT
This is when each department finalizes their plans and MacLane crafts each of his shots and camera moves.
5. ANIMATION
The wonderful artists at Pixar work their magic to bring the character to life.
6. EFFECTS
The FX teams add the supplemental textures needed to make each shot as real as possible.
7. LIGHTING and FINAL IMAGE
The lighting team led by Director of Photography Jeremy Lasky has the final crack at a scene.
